BAWDESWELL VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES GROUP
BACKGROUND – ORIGINS OF GROUP The Community Activities Group was formed on 16th
April 2007 DIRECTLY as a result of Project Bawdeswell. This Project was set
up in late 2004 as a sub-committee of the Parish Council, to take forward
some issues from the 2003 Village Appraisal that were proving difficult or
too expensive to address. A more detailed survey on these issues was carried
out in 2006 with input from children and young people as well as adults.
Following this, five sub-groups or work streams were set up to focus on
specific issues. The chart below shows the inter-relationships between the
various village organisations.
The Project Bawdeswell Activities Sub-group had, as
part of its remit a requirement to ‘Identify activities from the recent survey that could
be initiated now’ and to‘Co-ordinate
activities and seek volunteers to run them’. At the first meeting of this
group one of the most important requests in the 2006 survey, ‘more for children to do’, was
identified as something that should be acted on without further delay. It was
proposed, subject to raising sufficient funds and recruiting enough
volunteers, to open the Village Hall every weekday afternoon during school
holiday periods, to organize daily events and make sports and games equipment
available for children and young adults to use, starting in July 2007. It was considered that
the best way to do this was by setting up a ‘Community Activities Group’
as part of the Village Hall Committee as all of the planned activities
involved use of the hall and adjacent playing field. The Community Activities
Group was initiated at the Village Hall Committee meeting on 16th April 2007.
This aspiration gave the group an exceedingly tight timetable with a lot of
administration details to be dealt with. Monetary assets of the
Village Hall Committee are generally committed to the maintenance and
improvement of the building and facilities plus the probability of
contributing to enlarging the hall as part of Project Bawdeswell. Therefore,
it was decided that money for the activities group would have to come from
fund-raising events and grant applications plus income from sale of
refreshments during those activities. It is intended that, as far as
possible, all activities will be FREE although for some craft activities
there may be a small charge towards the cost of materials. As the full title of the group is
‘Bawdeswell Village Hall Committee – Community Activities Group’ is a little
unwieldy it has been shortened to ‘Bawdeswell Activities Group’ or ‘BAG’. It is part of Registered Charity No.
